| Rectal Enema using one to keep the rectum and colon or large intestine
cleaning. It involves the injection of a liquid into the rectum via the anus to soften the feces.
It distends the rectum and colon, and thereby cause the easy expulsion of the feces. An
enema is often
given for relieving constipation. Before a proctoscopic
examination or barium-enema
x-ray procedure. During the administration of the enema, you will be asked to lie on
your left
side, with the right leg flexed to the chest. This position will enable the enema
solution to flow easily into the colon. The solution most commonly used is a mixture of
mild soap
and approximately two liters of warm water that is placed in an ( container)
enema bag
with a flexible tube. The rectal
enema tube ( pic) end
will be lubricated ( Super
Salve) and inserted into the rectum about 4 to 6 inches, after which the soap solution
will be administered. Injecting the solution slowly helps to minimize discomfort. It is
also helpful to breathe slowly and deeply through the mouth to help minimize discomfort
and enable you to take the enema more comfortably and easily. If you experience cramps,
you need to let the administrator know so that the flow of the solution can be slowed or
stopped momentarily to make you more comfortable. Once the enema is administered, you will
probably feel the need to move your bowels. If possible, wait about 5 minutes to get the
best results. After you empty your bowels, please do not flush the toilet, as the
administrator should to view the evacuated contents to ensure the enema did its job
correctly. Enemas are great as long as you go to the toilet after you receive the soapy enema up
your rectum. If the anus begins to release soapy water and or coffee enema before you are ready remember to have plenty of towels handy. |

| Generally a rectal enema uses only enough liquid to fill the
rectum
and possibly the sigmoid colon. Normally these enemas are usually approximately 16ozs. of solution or less depending upon the size of the sigmoid colon and rectum. Not Recommended are
chemical enemas! You are much better off with just a plain warm water enema. Remember to Thoroughly Wash Your Equipment after Use
