| Anybody using a rectal balloon catheter should know the size of the
balloon when it is inflated inside the rectum.
Pictured below are the most popular rectal balloon catheters inflated on the market today
with the size in diameter. Remember you only need to inflate the internal balloon enough so that it will not slip out of the anus. Each individual is different on how much inflation is required to hold the balloon inside the rectum. |
250cc.= 2¼in. in diameter |
500cc.= 3½in. in diameter |
750cc.= 4¾in. in diameter |
Double Balloon Catheters
250cc.x250cc.= 2¼in.X 2¼in. |
250cc.x500cc.= 2¼in.X 3½in. |
250cc.x750cc.= 2¼in.X 4¾in. |
| In years past the largest balloon catheter made was 150
cc. Today we are seeing rectal balloon catheters manufactured that hold 750 cc. That is very large and when inflated to capacity can distend the rectum to a point of rupturing. If you think that you have ruptured the rectum you need to immediately go to the hospital. Rupturing any part of the colon can cause peritonitis which can cause death! |
| Over distention of a rectal balloon catheter until it
ruptures will possibly cut or rip the rectum wall. Which can lead to peritonitis
which can lead to serious illness or death. Balloon Catheters can and will explode if over distended! |
