proctoscope used for viewing the anus and rectum

The instrument is lubricated with surgical lubricant and inserted into the rectum.
This procedure might be mildly uncomfortable as the proctoscope stretches the anus
to accommodate the proctoscope.
The anus can easily stretch from 1 to 2 in. without a lot of discomfort.

A proctoscope is an instrument inserted into the anus to view the rectum
and the lower portion of the sigmoid colon.

The proctoscope is lubricated with a surgical lubricant and inserted into the anus inside the rectum, then the obturator is removed allowing an unobstructed view of the rectum.
The proctoscope also has a hollow channel through which instruments may be inserted. An example would be, another instrument may be inserted through the opening in the tube to take a small amount of tissue for examination under a microscope. Air may also be injected through the proctoscope to help expand the rectum and sigmoid colon to make viewing easier.
