Given with common sense and simple precautions, ENEMAS are far less dangerous than most over the counter non prescription drugs. If the enema is to be really effective. |
| Most people find it very difficult to retain an enema for more than a few
minutes, If the bowel is not clean, the peristaltic action of the colon will push against the
fecal masses and produce intense pressure in the rectum to expel the
solution . This will usually happen with your first enema in a series of enemas. Not much
you can do but expel the solution and start over. If you get a strong cramp and an urgent
need to expel, immediately getting up is the worst thing you can do. This makes the
descending colon vertical adding gravity to the force of water wanting out of the rectum.
This is good way to have an accident. If you can, wait while lying down. The pressure will
pass in 10 -15 seconds as the wave of peristalsis passes the sigmoid colon and
reaches the end at the anus. Then you can get up and proceed to the toilet and expel
without straining to hold it in. If you must go to the toilet, and the pressure is
intense, you can hold the buttocks together with both hands or take a folded wash cloth
and press it tightly against the anus. This will help the
anal muscles retain the solution. Then you can proceed to the toilet and release the enema
solution. When expelling the enema: The best position for expelling your enema is squatting over the
toilet. The squatting position puts pressure on your abdomen from your thighs. It is best if you place a Welles Step and then squat down over the toilet to release your enema |
