The appendix has literally no known function.  Scientists speculate that it might have served our long ago ancestors as a digestive aid in breaking down tough foods but it's only speculation.  What is known about the appendix is that it is rich in infection-fighting lymphoid cells ant that suggests a possible role in our immune systems.  It is one organ which can be removed from the body with no known ill effects and scientists believe that one day mankind will no longer have one.
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix.
Indigestible food (or fecal matter) delivered from the small intestine to the large intestine flows into the appendix and can form a blockage.  Resulting bacterial growth can inflame the appendix causing excruciating pain, fever, nausea and in some cases, bursts before surgery can be performed to remove it.   Colonic health aids in keeping our whole system in running smoothly.
